Rock 'n' Roll USA 1/2 Marathon Recap

If you have been following my blog for awhile, you are quite aware that myself and two friends have a goal of completing a 1/2 marathon in all 50 states.  We decided we should also throw our National's Capital into the mix and that is how we came to run the Rock 'n' Roll USA 1/2 in Washington, D.C. this past weekend.

Thursday
Nikki and I took an evening flight into D.C. where Deb was waiting at the airport for us to arrive.  Once we shared hugs and said our hellos, we headed for the Metro so we could take it to our hotel.  After arriving at our hotel, we settled into our room and talked for awhile before calling it a night and getting some shut eye.

Friday
We all decided to sleep in a bit on Friday since we were without our children.  Of course I woke up around 6:30 the first time and did make a phone call home to be sure my kids were up and getting ready for school.  The funny thing is the clock in our hotel room hadn't been "sprung" forward so when we finally got moving we realized it was actually almost 10:00 and not 9:00 as we had originallly thought.  Deb and I quickly headed downstairs to get some breakfast while Nikki decided to stay in the room and just have a Luna Bar for breakfast.  While we were at breakfast, Deb and I went ahead and grabbed some bagels, bananas, and peanut butter for race morning.  Once we were back in the room we decided to look at possible D.C. bus tours.  We found one that we felt would be the best deal and used the business center in the hotel to order our tickets.  We opted for the two day pass since there was a significant discount given for doing so.  Once we all had our tickets printed, we headed to the Metro in order to head to the race expo to pick up our packets.  We spent some time looking at the different vendors, made a few purchases, and stopped to have our picture taken quickly.

We left the expo and headed to Old Ebbitt's for lunch.  I enjoyed some fantastic fish and chips and of course had to have a bite of Deb's crab cakes.  The food was delicious!  After eating we stopped at the hotel quickly and then headed out to take advantage of day 1 of our bus tour.  We enjoyed riding on the bus and listening to the history of Washington, D.C.  We decided to go ahead and get off the bus and do some sightseeing.
Love this picture

We saw the President coming home on Marine One

After we finished checking out the sights, we stopped and grabbed some water and other drinks for race morning and then we headed back to our hotel to relax a bit before our dinner reservations.  We headed to Bobby Van's for dinner and it did not disappoint.  Thankfully we had asked the server how large the steak was prior to ordering as it was 16 ounces.  That would have been a heck of a lot of food if each of us ordered our own steak.  We decided to split the steak and also ordered a side of mashed potatoes to split.  It was the perfect amount of food and it left us with room for dessert.  Of course we all ordered our own desserts and shared....don't judge!  While we were having dinner we met another runner.  He was planning to run the full marathon on Saturday.  Upon talking to him, we found out that he has run a marathon in all 50 states plus D.C. twice and is working on his third time through.  His ultimate goal is to do this 5 times.  He was very kind and we really enjoyed talking with him.  He has quite an interesting story.  You can read about it here.  After dinner we headed back to the hotel to ge things ready for our early morning wake up call.

Saturday
The alarm went off around 6:15 AM and I was up making coffee and eating my pre-race breakfast.  Fortunately we stayed in a hotel that was relatively close to the start line so we were able to take our time.  Once everyone was ready we stopped in the lobby for a quick picture and then headed out for the start line.
Ready to Rock 13.1

On the way I needed to use the restroom for the 100th time so we ducked into one of the buildings.  Of course we had to show our ID and send our personal belongings through the xray.  It was worth the short delay to be able to use clean, line-free bathrooms.  Eventually we made it to my corral and I shared good luck hugs with Deb and Nikki and then we parted ways.  My goal for this race was to run sub 1:50 so I knew I had to stay around an 8:23 pace to do so.  My first mile came in perfectly at 8:24.  I would continue to run very well through mile 6 (8:08, 8:04, 8:10, 8:21, 8:12).  During the course of mile 5, I was talking with a few other runners and knew there would be a hill coming but I was not expecting it to be so steep.  In fact as I rounded the corner and saw the "mountain" in front of me I few inappropriate words came flying out of my mouth.  I did my best to make it to the top of the hill in a timely manner but my pace was seriously compromised as I hit mile 7 with a 9:02.  I did look at my Garmin stats after the race and don't you know there was a 262 ft incline for that hill...ouch!!  I was able to find my groove again pace wise relatively quickly and miles 8-11 went pretty well with a few small rolling hills but nothing that threw me off pace again like that mile 7 hill (8:10, 8:18, 8:06, 8:17).  Of course I was greeted by yet another hill at mile 12.  At this point I got angry with the hill and did my best to get up it without dropping my pace.  I didn't quite maintain my pace but I did make it up this hill in a more timely manner than mile 7's hill (8:39).  I knew at this point my goal time was slowly slipping away so I picked up the pace as best I could for mile 13 (8:16).  A spectator mentioned that it was all down hill to the finish and I thought okay, I can handle this.  Well I am not exactly sure what his definition of downhill is but the course did go back up for the last bit of the race.  I tried in vain to make it to the finish mat under 1:50.  I missed my goal by a mere 43 seconds and ran the final .1 (.31 according to my Garmin) in 2:31 which was an 8:14 pace.  Even though my final time didn't have a 1:4X:XX in it, I was very happy with my 1:50:42.  I ran a very smart race and I know for a fact if it hadn't been for those hills I would have crushed my goal.
Pretty consistent if you ask me

After finishing, I grabbed my medal, some water, and a chocolate milk and then talked with other runners while waiting for Nikki and Deb to make it to the finish line.  While I was waiting, I met a woman who told me she had cheated because she turned off at the half marathon and she was supposed to run the full.  I told her it wasn't cheating, it was just listening to her body.  She was disappointed though as this was supposed to be her 97th marathon and she had to call it quits at 13.1 because she was sick.  Mind you she had just run a marathon the weekend prior.  She's definitely an inspiration.  Once Deb and Nikki both finished we headed to the Metro station so we could go back to the hotel and shower.  On our way back we stopped and grabbed some Starbucks which really hit the spot.  We made it back to the hotel, showered, and then headed to Pot Belly's to grab a sandwich before doing more sightseeing.  Our plan was to ride the Metro to Arlington and then use day 2 of our bus tour to see the rest of D.C. and get back to our hotel.  Upon arriving at Arlington, Deb looked up the gravesite of a friend of hers that is buried there.  We stopped in the gift shop so she could buy flags to leave at the gravesite.  I thought I was done with hills after the race but let me tell you Arlington is incredibly hilly and we did a lot of walking in there.  We did eventually find the site Deb was looking for and then we decided to wait and watch the changing of the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers.  Of course by this time it was pouring rain so we did our best to stay dry while we waited.

After we watched the ceremony we headed to the front of Arlington to catch our bus.  Imagine our surprise when we eventually found out that the bus didn't run at all on Saturday due to road closures until 3:00 PM as a result of the marathon.  Nikki called the company to find all of this out and explained that we were unable to use day 2 of our pass as a result.  She was told to request a refund on the website which we all did.  We did get a prompt response that indicated we would be receiving a refund.  We will see how quickly that takes place.  We decided to just go ahead and take a cab to D.C. Cupcakes in Georgetown.  The line wasn't too crazy and we chatted with other people and made dinner reservations while we were in line.

Love this!!
Once we got inside we all bought some cupcakes to take home.  As we made our way to J. Paul's for dinner we did have to stop in the Athleta store and look around.  I would have loved to have one of everything.  Once again I had fish and chips for dinner and it was quite delicious.  We enjoyed a nice, relaxing dinner and had a few drinks before taking a cab back to our hotel.  Once back to the hotel we started packing for our return home on Sunday afternoon.

Sunday
We slept in a bit, got ready, and headed out to grab some breakfast before heading to the airport.  Deb's flight left an hour before ours so we said our goodbyes and then just relaxed at the airport until our flight.  I am pretty sure I slept the entire flight home and it felt great.  When we got to the airport I ran into my friend Melissa.  What are the odds that we would be flying on the same airline and arriving at the airport at the same time.  It worked out well though because she ended up needing a ride home.

All in all, it was another great girls weekend with a little 13.1 thrown in.  It was the first time I had ever been to Washington, D.C. and I really enjoyed it.

Complete a half  in all 50 states status:  11 states and D.C. completed

Completed states:  Arizona, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Texas.

Up next:  State #12 in Indianapolis, Indiana (Mini Marathon)

2013 "to do list" check-in

2013 Running Goals
1. First and foremost 26.2 under 4 hours--enough said
-As of February 28, 2013 I have been looking at marathons to determine where I would like to attempt this goal.  I'm leaning towards an October race.
2. Achieve a second sub 1:50 so I can remove the asterick from my current sub 1:50 PR
-I didn't run any half marathons in February.  I am still hoping to achieve this goal while running in DC in March.

2013 Mini Running Challenges
1. Run 100 miles per month
-73.1 miles run in February.  The stomach bug and pure exhaustion hit me hard and put a glitch in my monthly mileage goal.
2. Run 1300 miles for the year
- 1,123.09 miles to go to complete this challenge.

2013 Non-Running Mini Challenges
1. Cross-train at least twice a week
-I am incredibly happy with February's cross training.  I took 7 Pure Barre classes, 3 spin classes, and completed one fitness app.  In fact, one of my employees told me that she could see a difference in the way my clothes were fitting so the Pure Barre classes must be working.  Always nice to get a compliment.
2. Complete a jump rope workout every day
-This goal came to a halt last month to prevent injury and I didn't do a single jump rope workout this month.
3. Drink 50 ounces of water per day (based on my current weight, this is my daily water intake need)
-Success here.
4. Take my vitamins daily
-Vitamin taken every single day in February.
5. Continue to choose and cook healthier foods
-12 meals made in February.  I am pretty happy with this considering every single person in our house was sick for a few days in February.
6. Learn to swim...better luck this year
-Same story as last month.  We all know this one is a thorn in my side. I have done extensive research in regards to swim lessons. I just need to figure out what will fit my schedule and make the commitment.

I am very happy with my February training.  I managed to incorporate a lot more cross training and I have thoroughly enjoyed every class that I have attended.  Both the spin and Pure Barre instructors are great and really know how to motivate you to do your best.  I did fall short of my mileage goal for the month but I can't be upset about that since I was sidelined by that stomach bug.  Also, for those that are keeping track, I did not eat a single sweet or chip the entire month of February--challenge complete!!

I really would like to know when it is going to warm up here and actually start to resemble the fact that spring is just a few short weeks away.  I'm looking forward to running the Rock 'N Roll USA half in March with Deb and Nikki.  Here's hoping for awesome running weather with a killer PR to show for it!

Snoball Run 5K Recap

Considering I work for the school that hosted the run, I figured I should support our athletic teams and use this race as my training run for the day.  I would have run Saturday morning anyway so why not run with almost 600 of my closest friends.  Since there were close to 600 people registered to run the event, I knew parking would be a bit challenging.  I went ahead and parked at one of my employees houses and walked to the race with her.  The best part about racing where I work was the fact that I had access to my office and to the line-free restrooms just down the hall from my office.  It was nice to be able to leave my goodie bag, etc in my office during the race.  One other perk to working at the race location was the fact that the athletic director was kind enough to pick up my race packet as well as those of my two employees that walked the race.  We didn't have to wait in line at packet pickup and our numbers and goodie bags were in my office when we arrived.  Normally I run a pace run on Saturday mornings so my plan for the race was to finish in 25 minutes as that would put me within 20 seconds of my usual Saturday morning pace.  The race started and I fell into a nice groove pretty quickly.  I looked down at my watch and noticed I was holding 7:45 pace.  I was quite happy with this as I didn't feel like I was pushing hard to maintain it.  Mile one came and went in 7:45.  Just after mile one I caught up to some of the male high school swim team members and decided to run the rest of the race with them.  They were quite entertaining as they would ask how far into the race we were.  When I told them we were at 1.85 miles they mentioned that I was awesome because I knew the mileage so well.  I had to admit to them that it was only because I was wearing a Garmin.  We managed to get to the two mile mark with a 7:38 pace.  We continued on and the swimmers were discussing their plans to kick it in the last half mile.  Once we got to that part of the race, I did let them know the mileage.  I managed to stay with the swimmers through mile three which we hit at a 7:42 pace.  Now you would think at this point the swimmers would run it into the finish with me but of course in true high school student fashion they made a point to out kick me in the end.  I tried to stay with them but alas I just couldn't.  I finished a few strides behind them with a time of 23:35.  I was incredibly happy with my time considering it was much faster than 25:00 and I never felt like I had to push hard to maintain the pace.  After a few minutes, I headed back to my office to grab my things and then ran the one mile cool down back to my employees house to get my car.  I could have left my goodie bag in my office until I came into work on Monday but I really wanted to wear the shirt this weekend so I carried the bag for my cool down.
See how cute!!
Saturday's 5K was the first running of this event.  I am truly hoping it becomes a yearly occurence.  It was nice to be able to run a race so close to home.  Sunday morning I met up with my friends Missi and Kim for a long run.  The run was great and very scenic.  I had to work hard for the miles as my legs were still feeling Saturday's 5k but it was definitely worth it.
The beauty that is in our backyard

I think I was most impressed by our 1:30 finish time (9:00/mile) considering we didn't start out at that fast of a pace.  Here's a look at the splits:  9:34, 9:23, 9:02, 9:24 (the hill we love to hate), 8:45, 9:25 (the hill we love to hate take two), 8:42, 8:53, 8:41, and 8:23.

Bugged Training

Last week was a crazy week for my training as I was completely sidelined by the stomach bug.  I was at the ice rink with my kids for their ice show rehearsal on Sunday (Feb. 10th) and out of nowhere I was feeling terrible.  It was all I could do to make it home before getting sick.  It was a long, miserable night of getting sick off and on until early Monday morning.  My entire body was aching and I couldn't get comfortable for the life of me.  Monday evening I started to feel a bit better and thought I might be able to go to work on Tuesday.  Fast forward to Tuesday morning and my head was pounding so hard it was painful to stand up.  Pretty sure that was a direct result of being dehydrated from the bug.  Sure enough my daughter came down with it on Tuesday afternoon and had to stay home from school Wednesday with grandma.  The stomach bug can certainly throw a wrench into a training plan.  Here's a look at my "bugged" training last week.

Sunday, Feb 10
Plan:  10 mile run
Actual:  10 mile run (I didn't get sick until Sunday night)

Monday, Feb 11
Plan:  Strength training
Actual:  Stomach bug (hard core ab workout..yuck)

Tuesday, Feb 12
Plan:  4 Off/on miles
Actual:  Dehydation headache/stomach bug plus a sick child

Wednesday, Feb 13
Plan:  Pure Barre class
Actual:  Makeup homework with previously mentioned sick child

Thursday, Feb 14
Plan:  5 miles (hill repeats)
Actual:  4 miles (hill repeats)

Friday, Feb 15
Plan:  Pure Barre class
Actual:  Pure Barre class

Saturday, Feb 16
Plan:  5 pace miles, 50 minute spin class
Actual:  50 minute spin class

Sunday, Feb 17
Plan:  11 miles
Actual:  8 miles, Pure Barre class

Fortunately the week didn't end up being a complete wash.  I was happy to get in a few workouts.  I was definitely tired and had to work harder at each one.  I am sure that had something to do with having the stomach bug for several days.  Yesterday was supposed to be a strength training day but my body was telling me it still needed some recovery so I went with a rest day.  I am back on track with my training as of this morning.  I hit the YMCA indoor track at 5 AM for my planned off/on 4 miler and while my legs were tight from Sunday's workouts, I was able to hit all of my planned paces.  Here's hoping I am completely recovered and my training plan won't be "bugged" this week.

Strength Training, Cross Training, and Snow Running Oh My

One of the goals I have for 2013 is to add strength training as well as cross training in addition to my running.

Strength Training
I know myself well enough to know that if I don't do this in a group setting, where I am held accountable by others, I likely won't do it at all.  This is where my neighbor Brenda and Pure Barre come into play.  Brenda had posted about a studio coming to our area on her Facebook page.  I was very intriqued so I asked her for more information.  I made the commitment to join Brenda to see what is was all about.  This past Friday I stepped way out of my comfort zone and took my first Pure Barre class with Brenda by my side.  At first I was incredibly intimated and questioned my ability to complete the class but five minutes into the class I was loving it.  According to the website, Pure Barre lifts your seat, tones your thighs, abs and arms and burns fat in record breaking time. Clients see results in just 10 classes, lose inches in weeks and have fun doing it!  I have to tell you that description is 100% accurate.  I can't wait to go back and do the workout again!  I was a bit concerned that I wouldn't be able to move come Saturday morning when I had a hard time walking up my steps just 90 minutes after class had ended!
Getting our "tuck" on at Pure Barre Westlake
Cross Training
I was pleasantly surprised Saturday morning when I realized I could in fact move!  I headed to the YMCA for my planned 5 mile pace run on the indoor track.  I had noticed on the Saturday schedule that there was a spinning class as well.  I decided if I felt good after my run that I would check out the class.  I figured it would be perfect cross training!  I am so glad I decided to give it a try.  The instructor was great and he played fantastic music.  I am definitely doing this Saturday  morning workout combination more often!!

Feel the burn

Snow Running
Imagine my surprise when I woke up Sunday morning to major arm and ab muscle soreness.  I suppose that saying about "if you think it hurts today, just wait until tomorrow" is accurate.  I headed out into the cold and met up with Missi for a long run.  Missi had an hour on her plan and I was hoping for 9 miles so I figured I would run the first hour with her and then head out for the final 3 solo.  As we were getting ready to finish the first hour Missi asked me if I was going to run all 9.  I told her I really wanted to and she said she completely understood achieving your anticipated goal.  She even encouraged me to get back out there and do it.  We parted ways after 6 miles and I headed back out on my own with a promise to text her when I had finished.  Safety first!!
The gorgeous trail we ran on Sunday

In the end it was a fantastic weekend of workouts.  I had to shake my head this morning when I sneezed and my abs were screaming at me.  I guess the Pure Barre class paired with holding my abs in yesterday to stay upright on the trail really caught up with me.  I am loving it though!  Here's to more fun workouts this week!!

An amazing hill repeat session on my basement treadmill brought my January training to a close.  I am actually following a training plan that I created to see what kind of results I am capable of for the Rock 'N Roll USA 1/2 in DC in March so I am very excited to see how I finished out January.
My mantra on the treadmill this afternoon!

2. Complete a jump rope workout every day
-19 jump rope workouts completed.  I had to make the decision to bail on this challenge due to extreme knee pain after my 1/2 in Arizona.  I plan to alter this and try and get in a few jump rope workouts per month while making sure my knee isn't compromised.
3. Drink 50 ounces of water per day (based on my current weight, this is my daily water intake need)
-I'm happy to say I have been able to do this one with relatively little effort.
4. Take my vitamins daily

6. Learn to swim...better luck this year
-We all know this one is a thorn in my side.  I have done extensive research in regards to swim lessons.  I just need to figure out what will fit my schedule and make the commitment.

Overall I am very pleased with my January training.  I got to spend some time in Arizona with my best friend where the weather and the company were perfect.  This brings me to tomorrow, according to the calendar, tomorrow is February 1.  If you follow my blog you know I did a 30 day challenge last February where I gave up chips and sweets and did some type of fitness workout each day.  One of my staff members participated in it with me last year.  She came to me this week and asked if we could do the February challenge again.  So it looks like no chips or sweets for me starting tomorrow.  Anyone else want to join us?

Rock 'N' Roll Arizona 1/2 Marathon Recap

Friday
I was up at 4:30 AM to finish getting everything ready for my 6:50 AM flight to Arizona.  The early flight had seemed like a much better idea when I booked it than when my alarm was going off on Friday morning.  Since my flight was so early, I decided that it would make the most sense for me to drive myself to the airport which would allow me to have my car there upon my return on Monday.  I am not sure how I ended up in the parking garage and not an outdoor lot, but in hindsight I am very happy that I did because I didn't have to worry about leaving the building or scraping my car on Monday night when my flight landed.  Definitely a win-win situation in my book.  I was quite surprised to see a long security line before 6:00 AM.  It may have had something to do with the fact that a lot of schools had both Friday and Monday off and I saw many families at the airport.  I somehow made a wrong turn and ended up at the complete opposite end of the airport from my gate.  Once I got myself turned around I realized my plane was boarding so I went on a nice job through the airport and made it in plenty of time.  The early flight was made even more painful when a group of girls next to me on the plane talked very loudly for the duration of the flight.  There was no sleep to be had on the first leg.  I was quite happy to make it to Nashville so I could get away from their chatter!    While waiting for my connecting flight I grabbed some water and a few snacks for the flight to Phoenix.  After boarding the plane and finding a seat, the nice couple next to me asked what I was traveling to Phoenix for and I told them about the race.  At this point, a young mother started talking to me as she was training for her first half marathon.  Sadly, she was headed to Phoenix for a funeral.  Her first half will take place in Tennessee.  We talked a lot about cross training and how we fit our workouts in around our children's schedules.  It was a very nice conversation.  I did manage to grab a bit of a nap on this flight which was great.  Once we landed in Phoenix, I checked on the status of Deb's flight.  I saw that it had been delayed so I tried to call her phone but it went straight to voicemail so I figured she was on the plane.  After this I texted her husband who had the same results I did when he tried to call her.  A short while later Deb called and told me she had to talk fast because they were getting ready to leave.  She had graciously called the hotel to see if I could check in under my name so I wouldn't have to wait at the airport.  I asked her if I should cancel our facial appointments but she felt she would arrive in Phoenix by 4:00.  After I was done talking to Deb I called my inlaws, who are in Phoenix for the winter, to see if they happened to be available to pick me up at the airport and take me to my hotel.  When there was no answer, I went ahead and grabbed a cab to the hotel.  During my ride to the hotel, Deb texted and said that there was a hydraulics problem so they were getting off the plane.  A few minutes later Deb called to let me know what was going on.  She decided she was going to call and reschedule her facial for Saturday.  She encouraged me to keep my appointment since I was there and would be waiting for her to arrive.  At this point, we weren't sure when Deb would get into town but  she was certain she would make it Friday night and not have to wait until Saturday morning to fly out.  Of course the cab took the long way to my hotel and my total fare reflected that.  Oh well, it was better than sitting at an airport for several hours.  I got to my destination, checked in and headed to my room.  I took a few pictures along the way.

We were staying at the Firesky Resort in Scottsdale and it was very welcoming and gorgeous!  Once I was in my room, I went ahead and got my dailly jump rope workout in.  At this point I was quite hungry so I headed down to the hotel bar to order some food.  When I was ordering, I got a text message from Deb letting me know that she was finally getting on a plane and expected to arrive at the hotel around 7:00 PM.  I told her I was having a drink for her and suggested after her long day at the airport she may want to have a drink on the plane!  I was eventually joined at the bar by an older gentleman, who resembled and had the voice of Bob Barker, and his friend.  We made small talk and they learned of Deb's airplane issues and our reason for being in Arizona for the weekend.  After a short while they were joined by another friend.  The third friend had just quit his job to travel the 50 United States.  I found his story to be quite intereseting.  Eventually, a fourth friend came and they all headed off to the car auction but not before buying my drinks which was very nice of them and certainly not necessary.  I went back up to the room for a short while and then headed to the spa for my facial.  I had never had a facial before so I was looking forward to it.  It was an absolutely amazing hour of pampering and I am so glad I kept the appointment.  After this it was back up to the room to freshen up for dinner as Deb had finally made it to Phoenix and she was on her way to the hotel.  Deb arrived and we dropped her things off in the room and then headed to Grand Lux Cafe for dinner where Deb finally got her drink.  After dinner we took a little tour through downtown to see what there was to offer and then headed back to the hotel for some rest.

Saturday
The first time I woke up Saturday morning was 5:30 AM.  I am sure it was a result of the time change.  I told myself that I needed to go back to sleep which I was able to do until 9:45 AM which was much better.  I slowly got up and got dressed to get in a short run.  I asked Deb if she wanted to join me but she was good so off I went for a short trip around the canal near our hotel.  It was pretty warm but the scenery was worth it.  After I got back, I did my daily jump rope workout and then got ready so we could grab lunch before our scheduled pedicures.  We decided to have lunch at the restaurant in our hotel.  The portions were the perfect size and we were left with room for dessert.
Can you say delicious??
The extra room was worth every single bite.  While we were eating lunch, Deb got to meet three of the four people I had met the previous afternoon.  They asked if we would be at the bar later and we said that we would most likely end our night there so we would see them later and then we headed off for our pedicures.  The pedicures were very enjoyable and we had a great time catching up and chatting away.  Deb was scheduled for her facial shortly after this and she was kind enough to let me use her Mini Ipad to sit outside and read in the Arizona sunshine.  After her appointment we met back up and headed to the expo to pick up our race packets.  There is something to be said for going to the expo towards the end.  It wasn't overly crowded and we didn't have to wait in any lines.  With packets in hand we headed back to the hotel to get ready for dinner.  This time we chose to go to Olive and Ivy.  When we were ordering drinks, Deb ordered me a white sangria because as she says I always order beer.  Okay, she's right, I do.  I actually enjoyed the change in drinks.  The food was great at this restaurant as well.  Our dinner conversation mostly revolved around future 1/2's in the states we hadn't conquered yet as well as our plan for race morning.  There was a store of sorts in the restaurant so we were able to buy water and breakfast for race morning before we left.   Once back at the hotel we headed down to the bar.  We stopped to talk to our new found friends as they were sitting outside eating dinner.  They offered us a chair but we decided to go inside to sit since they were eating and we had just finished dinner.  Funny thing is that it was so hot inside that we ended up going back outside and sitting at the table next to them.  Eventually we moved to the same table as our new friends so we could talk some more.  They graciously purchased our drinks which of course they certainly didn't have to do.  In fact, I tried to pay my bill but "Bob Barker" wouldn't let me.  We talked until midnight or so and then we headed upstairs to get some shut eye.  I was a bit worried about it being so late but Deb pointed out that often times we go to bed at 10:00 and have to be up at 4:30.  We were going to be able to sleep until 6:15 so we would be fine.

Sunday
The alarm went off at 6:15 AM and of course I pressed snooze even though I had slept reallly well.   We got everything ready and then headed out to the race start in Tempe.  There were a lot of closed roads so it took us a lot longer than we had planned to get to the race.  It wasn't that big of a deal as the racce was chip timed so it didn't really matter when we started.  By the time we parked, the race had already started.  I obviously wasn't concerned when I took the time to stop and use a port-a-potty that had no lines whatsoever.  We eventually made it to the start line and jumped in with corral 11.  I was supposed to start in corral 3 but it wasn't a big deal at all.  I was able to manuever around people and get to my desired pace relativey quickly.  Everything was going great and I happened upon Dan Evans from the Biggest Loser around the 2.5 mile mark.  I said hello and continued on my way.  I was feeling good and happy to be maintaining my pace.  In fact I was even happier to  hit mile 6 with a slight cushion on my intended pace.  However around mile 7 the gradual inclines and speed took their toll on my left knee which I had fallen on back in December when I hit ice. I had to make a decision at that point. Should I push it and go for it or should I back off in order to be able to run another day soon. I took option B and I'm okay with that.  My PR goal quickly switched to a just finish it goal.  I achieved that goal when I crossed the line in 1:55:11.  I started having a slight asthma attack due to the difference in the air.  I quickly got it under control with the help of a volunteer.  She then took me to medical so I could have my knee looked at.  I still have a bruise on my knee from the fall so medical did ask me if I had fallen on the course.  Once I confirmed that I had not gone down on the course they wrapped my knee with ice and I was on my way.
After sitting for a few minutes I texted Kim from (Just) Trying is for Little Girls to let her know I was at the finish line so we could meet up for a quick picture.  I spotted her quite easily.  We talked for a few minutes and then her husband was kind enough to take our picture.
Kim and I.  The matching wasn't even planned
After the photos, we said our goodbyes and I waited to hear from Deb.  She texted me when she was at mile 10.  In the meantime I made a few phone calls to see how my friend Darlene was doing as she was running the full marathon.  When I talked to her husband it sounded like she was doing well.  Soon after Deb joined me, we had a quick picture taken, and then we started our journey back to the car.
11 states officiallly conquered
We probably walked a good three miles because neither one of us could quite figure out exactly where the car was.  While we were walking, I took the time to check in for my Monday flight home.  There's nothing wrong with multitasking now is there?!?!  We eventually made it back to our hotel.  I decided that I would have to end my daily jump rope workout streak as I don't think my knee would have been very happy with me so I went ahead a showered instead.  Deb had a pretty bad headache so she took some advil and tried to rest a bit.  After Deb was showered and feeling a little better we headed downstairs to grab a bit to eat.  After eating we sat by the pool for a little while and then decided to go upstairs and rest.  We pretty much slept until 7:00 when we got up and decided we should really go get some dinner.  We went back to the Grand Lux Cafe and grabbed some dinner.  Upon our return to the hotel we stopped at the front desk to take care of a few things, including getting my boarding pass printed.  We packed our things and called it a night.

Monday
Once again I woke up at 5:30 AM.  What is with that?  I managed to get back to sleep until a little after 9:00 though.  We gathered everything up, checked out, and headed to the airport.  Believe me when I tell you neither one of us wanted to return to our respective cities when we saw the weather report....COLD!!!!  Since we flew on different airlines we said our goodbyes at the rental car drop off and headed our separate ways.  My first flight took me to Chicago.  I was welcomed to Chicago by the pilot.  "Welcome to the windy city, it's a balmy 8 degrees, bundle up."  Of course I didn't have my sweater out yet so I just walked off the plane very quickly.  I grabbed some dinner at the airport and then headed to my gate for my flight to Cleveland.  When we landed in Cleveland I was once again welcomed by the pilot.  "Welcome to Cleveland where it's 14 degrees."  Oh boy, a heat wave compared to Chicago!  HAHA!  I was reminded how happy I was to have accidentally parked in the garage because I never had to leave the building and there wasn't any snow on my car!  The roads by the airport were terrible but things cleared up by the time I got close to home so that was a welcomed surprise.

So what's next?  Well, we are officiallly signed up for the Indy 500 1/2 marathon in May which will be state #12 but in the meantime we are talking about running the Rock 'N' Roll USA DC 1/2 in March.  We figure we have to run in the Capital of the United States as well.  I think we will have a final decision on this one today or tomorrow at the latest.

Keep running, you're simply the best, and you inspire me!!
