Thumbs Up Thursday...Brian A

This week's spotlight is on Brian A (here). After you read his interview head on over and check out his training. He is one impressive fellow!

Jodi: How long have you been running?
Brian: I've been running all my life and used to run home from school to ensure that I arrived on time to babysit my younger sisters before my father left for work on the night shift.

Jodi: Why did you start running?
Brian: However, I didn't formally use running as a training vehicle until 1996, when I turned 30 after gaining a ton of weight in my 20's and needed to battle the pounds. Within 6 months, I lost 35 pounds after tightening my diet and running about 30-45 minutes 4-5 times a week.

Running's impact after that initial training and weight loss period has stayed with me ever since: run regularly--Brian's not fat; don't run regularly--Brian's fat. There's no middle ground to retreat to; running and other phyisical activity is essential as air and water for me.

Jodi: How many years have you been racing?
Brian: I didn't formally begin "racing" until the fall of 2007 when I ran in a 5k charity event we sponsored at work. I was fighting off injuries and hadn't formally trained for the 5k, but I ran it in 26:21 (8:28 pace). The following week, I ran/walked the 2007 Chicago Marathon on a dare from a friend who decided not to run in the event, but didn't want to waste his bib.

I didn't realize it at the time, but those events would be my high-water marks until 2010, as I broke my left ankle before the 2008 Chicago Marathon and spent 2009 battling injuries, inconsistent training, and mounting weight gain.

Jodi: What is your favorite distance to race and why?
Brian: Before 2010, my response would have been the 5k, but I've fallen in love with half marathons after never running in one before this year. 13.1 mile events require a delicate balance of speed, endurance, determination, and patience that works well for me. My worst half performance of 2010 was 1:59:38 in 90 degree heat and a heavy downpour of rain in the middle of the event. I found out a lot about myself that hot day in Minneapolis: finishing counts and a true competitor has a responsibility to finish strong.

Jodi: What is your least favorite race memory?
Brian: In October, 2009 I returned to the charity 5k that kicked off my racing career after fighting off injuries for more than a year and proceded to put in my worst performance ever: 28:40 (9:13 pace).

My legs were dead after the first mile, but I kept chugging along until the 2.5 mile mark when a colleague from the office running in his first race saddled along my left side. He and I exchanged a few pleasantries and I blasted off in an attempt to finish the event before he did; which I accomplished, but he still beat me by 24 seconds overall due to chip timing.

That event was a wake up call for me; I wasn't even the best runner at the office anymore. Something had to change.

Jodi: What is your favorite race memory?
Brian: A year later (October, 2010), I returned to the charity 5k, but as a different runner and person on the heels of losing nearly 60 pounds and participating in 16 events in 2010.

This year, event organizers held both 5k and 10k events, where 5k competitors completed a turn around and had to sprint past 10k runners to return to the start/finish line. The event was held a week before the Chicago Marathon and I was in primo condition, so I flew past a long line of competitors in the fastest mile split of my running career; my colleagues from the office saw me and voiced their approval.

I finished in the top 4-percent of that event; winning a silver medal for my age group. But it meant more to me than anything that my colleagues saw me at my best that day and that a commitment to change fostered success.

Jodi: What one item do you absolutely have to have with you on a training run?
Brian: I've been carrying water bottles in training runs and events ever since the beginning. A close second are my running watches (I usually wear 2 in events; one as a backup).

Jodi: What is your favorite fuel during a race?
Brian: I usually don't eat in events, but I add a sodium/electrolyte mixture to my carry-on water bottle to replace mineral loss and stay hydrated.

What is your favorite post race snack?
Pancakes and waffles. I know; pretty generic. But that's usually what I crave for after big events.

Jodi: Who do you admire most and why?
Brian: I admire individuals who have a strong sense of mission and destiny, who harness their energies to achieve their goals.

I've recently used John Adams as an example with a colleague at the office. One of the reasons Adams was such an influential leader at the beginning of the American Revolution was that he knew the passions of the general populace due to his travels as a lawyer and businessman on horseback. He went to the business; not the opposite. That wasn't the case with many of his contemporaries.

The same could probably be said of Kelly K and Ben W who founded the Daily Mile online community. There were a number of individuals who were posting workouts/event results on Twitter, Facebook, and independent blogs, but Kelly and Ben had the courage, foresight, and vision to build a community; validating the adage from the film, Field of Dreams: "If you build it, they will come."

Jodi: Do you have a favorite quote?
Brian: "Every man dies. Not every man really lives." William Wallace, the character Mel Gibson played in the 1995 movie "Braveheart," has been credited with saying that.

Jodi: Finish this statement, when I run I feel ______.
Brian: Alive.

Jodi: What is your current goal?
Brian: My biggest goal for 2011 is to qualify for Boston in 2012. I may have stated that in 2010, but it was more aspirational than reality. My training and race performances have brought me to the point where a BQ marathon performance is within my grasp if I stay the course and keep injuries at bay.

My second biggest goal for 2011 is to finally win an event before year's end. It's taken several years, but I know what the "front of the pack" looks and feels like now; I'm not afraid to mix it up in races anymore.

Jodi: Please feel free to add anything else you feel will help others lace up their shoes and get out there and run!!
Brian: My biggest hope is that strong athletes will work harder to spread the joy and accomplishment of running across the globe. It breaks my heart to see a runner run 15 miles and post a frowny face to describe the workout on Daily Mile. You're kidding me? There are runners who have never run that distance; what do they make of runners who post frowny faces or describe indoor runs on the "dreadmill."

That's not what William Wallace, John Adams, Kelly K, or Ben W would do.

"Joymill" not "Dreadmill," let's spread the word and build a healthier and more positive world to live in.
What Thumbs Up Thursday would be complete without photos? I give you Brian A!!

Request for encouragement for one of our own because afterall, runners stride together!

Yes, the title was my lame attempt at a Might Ducks movie quote. Those of you that have been following my blog for awhile now know that I spend a great deal of time running with one of my good friends Jenn. In fact, I have run two 1/2 marathons with her now and will be running the Cleveland Marathon with her on May 15, 2011.

Jenn has had some struggles as of late with running, exercise, and eating. She just posted on her blog for the first time since the 1/2 marathon we ran in September. If you could please head over to her blog and read her post (here) and offer her encouragement I would greatly appreciate it. She is strong and she will prevail she just needs to be reminded of her strength and abilities!

Thank you so much for being such a supportive community! I will post my November in Review later this evening once I finish my treadmill run!

Keep running, you're simply the best, and you inspire me!!

Thumbs Up Thursday...Wendy Welch

Today's Thumbs Up goes to Wendy Welch. I sent Wendy an email to let her know that I would like to blog about her today and I asked her to answser several questions in the email. She sent me a text message and let me know she got the email and wondered if she could just answer my questions on the phone. I replied and said probably if I could give her a call after 9:00 and then I asked her what time was too late to call. Her reply was: "I will be asleep! I will try and reply to your email when I get home." I told her I was impressed that she went to bed so early. Her response to that: "I try to get to bed early because I am up by 4am to beat the heat and get my run in." Did I mention Wendy lives in Florida? Wendy was kind enough to answer my questions in an email last night!

Thumbs Up Thursday..This one's for you Jenn....

Yesterday I was sitting here thinking about what I wanted to write about on my blog today and I couldn't help but feel like I wanted to share the story of my friend, and sorority sister, Jenn. So, I sent her a message to ask permission to share her story and she was more than agreeable, honored, I think was the word she used. So, with permission granted, I have instituted "Thumbs Up Thursday". Each Thursday, I will focus on the success of others.

This is Jenn in January 2009

Jenn calls this photo "the wake up call that I needed to change something in my life". Jenn realized that she was turning to food to deal with her emotions and she knew she needed to change things so she could be happy and healthy for her family. Jenn started out trying to do different workouts at the gym. She enjoyed them but felt she needed something more and this is when her love for running was born. She started with the couch to 5K program and realized that she had a passion for running. She ran her first 5K on May 2, 2010 and finished it under 30 minutes. What an accomplishment. She loved running so much that she signed up for the 5K that was part of the Cleveland Marathon. Fast forward to the packet pick up for the 5K and Jenn realizes that she wants more and changes her entry from the 5K to the 10K! Jenn mentioned she was nervous but she successfully finished that race. Jenn has since run a few other races. I asked her if she was addicted (because we all know how addicting running can be) and she said yes and mentioned that she loves how she feels after a run and how she can clear her head out there and have a better day all around. I get it! She is currently training for a 1/2 marathon and has signed up for the Cleveland Marathon for next year! Jenn has mentioned to me on a few occassions that I inspire her but the truth is...Jenn inspires ME!! Her hard work and dedication amaze me each day and makes me realize we can do anything we set our mind to. Afterall, look how great she looks now in June 2010 (130 pounds lost)!

Jenn has started a running blog of her own and I ask that you send some love, support, and good jobs her way! http://runjenn.blogspot.com/.
The best part of all of this is that we will be doing long runs together while training for the Cleveland Marathon. Jenn mentioned that she is excited and honored to run the marathon with me but again the truth is, I am honored that she would ask me to join her. There's a lot to be said for the bond between sisters! I am looking forward to crossing that finish line with her in May!
As you all know, I have a tag line that I end all of my blog posts with. Today, I am going to alter it just a little!
Keep running, you're simply the best, and Jenn, YOU inpsire ME!!

May in Review

Today's 3 mile run brought my May training to a close. It was quite hot and humid out there today but I was pleased to find my legs again. I was finally able to run under a 9 minute mile pace today (which I hadn't been able to do since the marathon attempt)!

May Stats

88.62-- running miles
0-- elliptical miles
0-- bike miles
88.62-- total miles
2-- shortest distance covered in May (end of marathon training schedule)
25-- longest distance covered in May (Cleveland Marathon DNF)
148-- weight as of May 31, 2010 (total weight loss to date...46 pounds)

Current 2010 Stats

503-- running miles
50.9-- elliptical miles
5.1-- bike miles
559-- total miles

Overall, I am pleased with my May training. I didn't plan on a DNF in the marathon but everything happens for a reason and I have to believe there was a reason I didn't conquer the marathon this time. I will in fact attempt 26.2 again.

As for now, I am completing the 4 week post marathon training program. I will end it with the "Girls With Sole 5K" on June 20.

Keep running, you're simply the best, and you inspire me!!

Wow, you've lost a lot of weight...

I had a meeting this afternoon with one of the members of our local Kiwanis to assist him in his food order for the annual pancake breakfast that takes place in April. I was sitting at my desk when he walked in and his eyes got pretty wide and he said: "wow, you've lost a lot of weight, can I ask how much because you look amazing". Without hesitation I said yes of course you can ask and I am down almost 45 pounds (43.2 as of February 28, 2010 to be precise). We took care of his food order and then our conversation went back to my weight loss. He asked me what diet I had followed and I just chuckled. I said actually I ran the Cleveland 1/2 Marathon last year in memory of Stephanie Lufkin and I found my love for running again and I have continued on with my training and I am currently training for the Cleveland Marathon. I did mention that while I don't necessarily "diet", I am unable to eat as much these days. I am not sure if it is related to running but hey whatever works right?

So with my boosted ego, I headed out for my eight mile run this afternoon. I ran by Lake Erie. It was very pretty today and I was disappointed that I didn't have a camera or my phone because the Lake looked awesome with some frozen capped waves that were still melting. I passed several other runners, walkers, and bike riders. It was a beautiful day for working out. The run was great. I took it nice and slow since I am still recovering from my fifteen miler on Sunday. I finished in 1:16:47 (9:35/mile). I am running a local 5K on Saturday so I will be altering my training for the rest of the week. I figure I will just do what feels right. Friday will definitely be a rest day.

Keep running, you're simply the best, and you inspire me!!

152, 18-20, 5...what a difference a year makes part 2

I decided to go ahead and take those jean pictures. I couldn't find the Women's 18 in my closet. So I have done sizes 16, 14, 12, and 10.

Women's Size 16

Women's Size 14

Women's Size 12

Women's Size 10

I would like to add that I can actually put on and button and zip a size 8 but they are tight in the hips. What do you expect after having two children? However, I will take it! I think I look pretty darn good!!

152, 18-20, 5.....what a difference a year makes part 1

152
My weight as of January 9, 2010. Down 42 pounds since December 2009. What a difference a year makes!!

18-20
The size snow pants I tried on last night. They were YOUTH size 18-20 and they fit except they were a little too short for my 5'9" frame. To think I wore an 18 in women's this time last year (I think I still have those jeans in the closet. I should put them on and take a picture!) WOW--again what a difference a year makes!!

5
The number of miles I ran on the treadmill last night. I chose to run intervals to make the time go by faster. I ran 18 X 400 (9 of them at 5k pace) plus my warm up and cool down. This time last year I wasn't running a single step. So, I will say it again...what a difference a year makes!!

Keep running, you inspire me, you're simply the best!!

Preparing for the official training to begin!

Well, Sunday will be day one of my official training schedule for the Cleveland Marathon. After watching the weather report last night for the next several days, I am thankful that my treadmill was delivered yesterday and that my elliptical is being delivered in the next hour. I have a feeling I will be doing a lot of my training for the marathon on said equipment. I made the mistake of running outside every single day (except one) last year while I was training for the Cleveland 1/2 Marathon. Of course running outside in the winter involved ice and in turn landed me with an injury that had me down for the count for two weeks (one of those weeks being on crutches). I ran 4 miles on the treadmill yesterday and it felt great. Thankfully there is a TV mounted on the wall in the basement or I may have been incredibly bored. Given the choice, I prefer to run outside but I will do what I need to do to stay healthy and injury free and if that means working out inside then so be it.

As I have mentioned before, I will be running the marathon in honor of my dear friend, Deb. The weekend of the marathon it will be ten years since she had a brain tumor removed. We are forming a team to raise money and awareness for brain tumor treatment and research in her name. Once I have the information about our team, I will post it on my blog so that others who are interested may join the team or make a donation!

I am continually amazed at the love I have found for running again! As of December 24, 2009, I have lost 40 pounds!

The first picture is from December 26, 2008 at a mini high school reunion with my friend, and fellow runner, Robert. I was 194 pounds in that picture. The second picture is from December 24, 2009 at my house on Christmas Eve with my dear friend, and running buddy, Deb. I was 154 pounds in that picture!

"You Inspire Me"

I was at a neighborhood OSU vs MICH party on Saturday (GO BUCKS) and I saw some neighbors I hadn't seen in awhile. We got to talking about my running and how it has been a great weight loss tool. Many questions were asked:

~How long have you been running? Since February 2009
~How much weight have you lost? Close to 40 pounds
~Are you growing your hair out? Yes, I figured new weight, new hair
~Did you run outside all last winter? Yes, I did (well, except one day when the wind was blowing a snow/hail mix in my face...I opted to use the treadmill that day)
~Do you have any new goals? Yes, I want to complete the Cleveland Marathon in May

As I was leaving the party, one of my neighbors said three simple words that made me realize there are so many physical and emotional benefits to running. Those three words were "you inspire me."

Keep on running and always remember "you inspire me."
