Cleveland Marathon Part 1

The events of Marathon Weekend started on Friday evening with a VIP reception.  Thank you for inviting me Jenn!  It took place at the Hyatt and we enjoyed salad greens, a pasta bar, and delicious cupcakes.  The chef was very accommodating to my dietary needs.  I can't digest olive oil so he made me my own pasta stir fry with vegetable stock and it was delicious.  It was nice to listen to the speakers.  It really got me excited for what was to come.
Saturday morning I was up early getting all of my stuff packed for the marathon.  After I finished packing and picked up the babysitter, I grabbed some breakfast and then headed downtown to check into the Renaissance Hotel which would prove to be the worst hotel experience of my life.  Imagine my surprise upon check-in when I was informed that they couldn't accommodate my request for 2 beds.  I made the request for a reason.  Three people and one bed just don't add up!  The front desk's solution was to send a roll away to our room.  It was blatantly obvious that they knew of the screw up because the roll away was already in the room when we got upstairs.  Cue the housekeeper who knocks on the door to deliver the requested roll away bed.  The poor man was thoroughly confused by the fact that there was already one in the room.  He also couldn't understand how we could possibly fit a roll away in the room without having to crawl all over each other just to use the facilities.  He promptly called the front desk and told them we needed a new room.  They told him that they would call us back which of course never happened.  We headed downstairs to talk with the manager in regards to the situation.  She took my phone number and told me she would call if anything came up.  I did manage to get a free parking pass out of her which was a bonus.  With our room situation up in the air, we headed to the expo.

We arrived at the expo around 2 PM for the blogger meet up.  We were joined by Sara and Connie and we took advantage of the photo-op!

After the photos, we headed to get our bib numbers and goody bags.  Dave was less than impressed with the very female oriented products in the bag.  Pretty sure he doesn't need Lady's Speed Stick or headbands.  He did put the headband on.  Of course over on his blog he mentioned that we didn't get a picture but we so did!  Here's the proof!!

We walked around the expo for a bit and ran into the Cleveland 10 Miler girls.  The girls couldn't contain their excitement when they realized the shirts were pink this year!  I love those girls and I am so glad I got to meet them through Dave!  Thanks for using your "shy" personality to make new friendships Dave!!  After this we continued to walk around the expo.  As I turned the corner to go down the next aisle the word HYPONATREMIA was on the presentation screen.  The slide brought back memory's of last year's Cleveland Marathon where I collapsed at mile 25.52 from this awful medical condition.  After a minor freak out I collected myself and stopped at my friend Katie's booth.  She was in need of a potty break so I worked her booth for a few minutes.

After standing in for Katie, I got in line to meet Bill Rodgers and Anne Audain.  After they signed my bib, we talked briefly about my experience at Cleveland last year, and then we took a few quick photos.  The picture of me with the speakers is too funny because Bill Rodgers is reacting to my story from last year's Cleveland Marathon.

Just before we were getting ready to leave the expo the Good Greens booth was drawing a number for a $100 prize.  As I walked past a little boy, I saw his number and realized he had won the money.  I told his parents to which they said no way.  The little boy was in shock and amazement.  I couldn't help but smile.  It was the perfect ending to the expo.

We headed back to the hotel to find out the status of our room situation.  When we approached the manager again she seemed to have absolutely no idea who we were.  I gave her a quick recap and then she seemed to remember.  She handed us keys to room number two and told us to check it out and see if it was any bigger.  The room wasn't much bigger so we went back down and she handed us keys to room number three.  I was hoping the "third times a charm" saying would come into play at this point.  While the room wasn't huge by any means, we decided we would be able to make it work and took the room.  We moved all of our stuff into magic room number three and then headed out for the pasta dinner at the Hyatt that Jenn had won us free tickets for!  I told Dave it was his job to pick our table because he is a magnet for great conversation.  His table choice did not disappoint.  We sat with wonderful people that had some great stories to share.  As we were finishing dinner Joanna sent me a text and she made her way to our table.  We had a wonderful conversation with her and it was almost as if we had known her for years.  As we were getting ready to head back to the hotel I got a text from Morgan letting me know that she was headed to our hotel because she had goody bags for Jenn and I (thanks girl). She felt bad because she didn't realize Dave was with us so she didn't have anything for him.  I had been looking forward to meeting Morgan all week and Dave was enjoying making fun of me for it.  I will be the first to admit that I have a girl crush on Morgan, and I even told her that Saturday night.  She just smiled and giggled and seemed perfectly fine with it.  Morgan is an amazing writer and I wanted to meet the person behind the keyboard.  Her personality is definitely synonymous with her writing.  Seriously, the girl was hugging us two seconds after we walked up to her in the lobby!  She has an incredibly bubbly personality and a fantastic sense of humor which was evident when she asked the security guard to take our picture and she had the man laughing so hard he could barely keep the camera straight.

After the pictures, we made a final plan to meet in the hotel lobby at 6:00 AM.  We headed to our room and got everything ready for race morning.  We instantly became slap happy and we laughed so hard that I had tears streaming down my face.  Laughter is definitely the best medicine for stress relief.  Jenn and I headed to bed around 10:30 and Dave headed down to the lobby for a bit because as he said it was way too early for him to go to bed.  I slept quite well and woke up easily to the first alarm at 4:30 AM.  I had no idea what would be in store for me....

Keep running, you're simply the best, and you inspire me!!!

I finished the Cleveland Marathon

You will have to wait for a detailed race report because I have A LOT to write about and I'm insanely exhausted, but here's the quick version.

Final Time: 5:53:24

No less than 8 full on anxiety attacks before and during the race.
Tears being shed no less than 5 times.
The desire to walk off the course at mile 7 but THANKFULLY Dave had my back for all 26.2 miles.  I couldn't have done it without him.

Full report of the weekend to follow soon!

Keep running, you're simply the best, and you inspire me!!

Thumbs Up Thursday...Mellisa

This week's spotlight is on Mellisa.  I originally met Mellisa at the Cleveland 10 Miler and this past weekend I had the opportunity to run with her.  Without further delay I give you the interview portion of Thumbs Up Thursday!!

Jodi:  How long have you been running?
Mellisa:  Wow, I have to use math – I think it all started 2003.

Jodi:  Why did you start running?
Mellisa:  Peer pressure, just kidding. It all started with walking and I felt the need to kick it up a notch.

Jodi:  How many years have you been racing?
Mellisa:  My first half marathon was Bonnie Park Spring kick off in 2006. I had done a few other local races but that was by far my longest distance that year.

Jodi:  What is your favorite distance to race and why?
Mellisa:  By far the half distance, I feel I still need to meet goal of 2:06 or less. The distance is just far enough to keep you challenged and far enough to keep trying to beat your own PR. .

Jodi:  What is your favorite race memory?
Mellisa:  It had to be the Full Cleveland Marathon last year. I went into the race strong and prepared thanks to my training buddies/friends Deb and Kim. They kept me accountable and consistent. Not only did I go into the race strong I finished strong physically and emotionally.

Jodi:  What is your least favorite race memory?
Mellisa:  Ha-Ha - My first Full marathon in Columbus – I took the distance for granted – in short, it was a long miserable run/race. Oddly enough after finishing, I actually said I would do another one.

Jodi:  What is your proudest running moment to date?
Mellisa:  There are many but anytime that I can finish my races w/my training buddies/friends I’m always proud.

Jodi:  What one item do you absolutely have to have with you on a training run?
Mellisa:  Hehe, my fuel belt and my garmin. If I’m missing either one I feel naked, although I did run my first 5K a few weeks ago without my fuel belt and I was fine but I wouldn’t want to do without them on my long training runs.

Jodi:  What is your favorite fuel during a race?
Mellisa:  GU – chocolate or vanilla.

Jodi:  What is your favorite post race snack?
Mellisa:  Peanut butter and jelly on whole wheat with a banana.

Jodi:  Who do you admire most and why?
Mellisa:  Besides my boys – my friend Sharon – I love who she is, I love how I feel when I’m with her. She accepts me and understands “me” on my terms and vice versa. She is by far my go to girl. I’m smiling as I type this.

Jodi:  Do you have a favorite quote?
Mellisa:  Me, Miss Quote Queen of course.
“We either make ourselves happy or miserable. The amount of work is the same.”
“The only disability in life is a bad attitude.”

Jodi:  Finish this statement, when I run I feel __________.
Mellisa:  Well that depends on the run, but mostly strong, confident and stress free.

Jodi:  What is your current goal?
Mellisa:  Training for the Chicago Marathon that will take place on October 9, 2011.

Jodi:  Please feel free to add anything else you feel will help others lace up their shoes and get out there and run!
Mellisa:  Whatever your goals or your motivation for lacing up, do it for “you.” Anything less and you will be selling yourself short. The journey should be all about you, the ‘perk” is all the wonderful people you meet along the way and there will be many.

The best motivation always comes from within.
- Michael Johnson

Thanks again for the opportunity to give you a Thumbs Up Mellisa.  Best of luck at the 2011 Chicago Marathon!  Looking forward to running some of Cleveland with you on Sunday!!

Keep running, you're simply the best, and Mellisa YOU inpsire ME!!

The Final Long Run

Today marked the final long run of the 18 week Cleveland Marathon training cycle!  The plan was for Jenn and I to meet at 7 AM for our 8 mile run.  I updated my status on Facebook to reflect the final long run!  Minutes later Deb commented on my status saying that she and Mellisa were also heading out to run so I asked her when and where.  It turned out that we would be running at the same location but I knew Jenn and I were supposed to meet at 7 AM.  Things always have a way of working out and I got a text message from Jenn asking if we could meet at 7:30 because she overslept.  I told her 7:30 would work great and commented on my facebook status that Jenn and I would be there at 7:30 so we all decided to meet there and run together!  I love the sport of running!  It's amazing how many wonderful people you meet!  To think a few weeks ago we didn't even know Mellisa and Deb and today we were doing part of our final long run with them.  It was a lot of fun to run and talk to them about our upcoming races next weekend.  Mellisa and Deb will be running the 1/2 marathon at Cleveland and are training to run the Chicago Marathon in October!  When we got to the four mile mark we stopped and took a few pictures and said we hoped to see each other next Sunday!

Mellisa, Jenn, and Deb at the four mile mark

Mellisa, Deb, and I at the four mile mark

four ladies at the four mile mark
Jenn and I headed back to finish up our run.  As we approached the end of our run Jenn started sprinting.  I had no idea she was going to do that.  It was too funny!  She wanted to see what she could do at the end of the run!  She was so proud of that sprint and I was too!  Jenn had mentioned how she loved getting medals at the end of a lot of our recent long runs.  We were able to do this by tacking on miles to races that we entered.  I told her at the beginning of the run that I didn't have a medal for her at the end of the run but I did have something else for her but she would have to finish the run to get it.  As we were stretching at our cars, I presented her with her very own signed copy of Kara Goucher's book!  I think it was close enough to a medal! :)  Right before we left, we took the traditional post run picture!!

8 miles and done
One week from today I will be seeking my revenge on 26.2 also known as my epic 2010 Cleveland Marathon DNF which you can read about here, complete with my awesome back bib from races2remember!  There will not be much running to speak of this week but that's okay because I want to be at the start line with Dave and Jenn and anybody else that would like to run with us with rested legs, a clear mind, and a full heart!

Keep running, you're simply the best, and you inspire me!!

Thumbs Up Thursday...Kimberly

This week's spotlight is on Kimberly.  I had the pleasure of meeting Kimberly at the Cleveland 10 Miler a few weeks ago.  She is incredibly kind and has a contagious personality!  You can follow Kimberly's training here.  Without further delay, I give you the question and answer portion of Thumbs Up Thursday!

Jodi:  How long have you been running?
Kimberly:  Since the spring of 2004. Wow, 7 years already! YAY, Me!

Jodi:  Why did you start running?
Kimberly:  My Golden Retreiver, Allie, was getting heavy. Her 'brother' had cancer, and I was focusing on him and his treatments. She wasn't getting the attention she deserved. I thought running together would be a great way for her to loose a few pounds and for us to get some 'girl time' in. Really, what is better than running with your favorite girls? Turns out she hated running. She stopped but I kept going.

Jodi:  How many years have you been racing?
Kimberly:  Almost 7 years. My first 5k was 2004, October 4th I think.

Jodi:  What is your favorite distance to race and why?
Kimberly:  So far 13.1 and under. I think I like them all. Since I don't have a favorite let's just go with the 10 Miler because it is a challenging distance to train for but attainable.

Jodi:  What is your favorite race memory?
Kimberly:  Running Surf City Marathon (half) with my husband. It was my first 'long' race and I was so nervous. He stayed with me and encouraged me the entire time.

Jodi:  What is your least favorite race memory?
Kimberly:  I can't think of one. My legs just stopped towards the end of Surf City and while it was frustrating it isn't really a bad memory. I do hate the I-have-to-vomit feeling at the end of 5k's but, again, it doesn't really count as a bad memory.

Jodi:  What is your proudest running moment to date?
Kimberly:  Running for Team McKibben this past February. It was the Riverview Winterfest 4 Miler in Michigan. It wasn't my best race or my best time but it was for the best cause. It was a fundraiser for someone I went to high school with. Steven is battling pancreatic cancer. He was diagnosed with it just as his wife was starting to win her battle with breast cancer. They have two young children. It just breaks my heart that this family has to go through this and, on top of it, insurance doesn't cover all necessary treatments. Finances shouldn't be a determining factor on whether or not you receive a potentially life saving treatment.

Jodi:  What one item do you absolutely have to have with you on a training run?
Kimberly:  Right now I cannot live without my CW-X tights. I've had injuries for the past year and I really think these are helping me.  Can I sneak my Garmin into them and call it one item? Gotta have Garmin.

Jodi:  What is your favorite fuel during a race?
Kimberly:  If you mean for energy, my friends are my favorite fuel. They are very inspiring. Otherwise, I'll pick GU Mandarin Orange or GU Blackberry 2x Caffeine energy gels.

Jodi:  What is your favorite post race snack?
Kimberly:  I'm loving chocolate Muscle Milk light right now. Only 100 calories with 15 grams of whey protein. Plus it comes in a fun little box with a straw.

Jodi:  Who do you admire most and why?
Kimberly:  My husband because he puts up with me :)

Jodi:  Do you have a favorite quote?
Kimberly:  "Tequila!", Danny Flores. Oh wait, that isn't considered a quote is it? I don't have a favorite quote but here are a couple that I really like:

"Happiness is an attitude. We either make ourselves miserable, or happy and strong. The amount of work is the same." -Francesca Reigler

"Whether you believe you can or believe you can't, you're probably right." -Henry Ford

Jodi:  Finish this statement, when I run I feel___________.
Kimberly:  Just one ending? It really depends on the run. I have to make it multiple choice. WHEN I run I feel:  nvigorated, happy, miserable, frustrated. Normally it is the first two but if it is a bad run it will be the second two. For sure though, AFTER I run it is always invigorated. A bad run is always better than no run.

Jodi:  What is your current goal?
Kimberly:  Current race goal is the Rite Aid Half. Current running goal is just to stay injury free. I'd like a nice, strong year. Hopefully I'll be ready for speedwork after Rite Aid.

Jodi:  Please feel free to add anything else you feel will help others lace up their shoes and get out there and run!!
Kimberly:  No matter how slow you run, you are still faster than your couch. For the record this in not my quote it is an anonymous quote that I changed slightly. It is true though. Also, when you are on the fence about a workout, just get out there and do it. You will always be glad you did it. You will not always be glad that you didn't. If you don't feel good you can stop but most of the time you will keep going.

Thanks again for the opportunity to give you a Thumbs Up Kimberly!  Best of luck at the Rite Aid Half and with staying injury free!!

Keep running, you're simply the best, and Kimberly YOU inspire ME!!

April in Review

Saturday's Country Music 1/2 Marathon brought my April training to a close.  Running the 1/2 for "Uncle" Joe on Saturday was a great way to end the month.  You can read my recap of the race here.  April also brought my final two 20 mile training runs.  The weather continued to fluctuate throughout April.  I was in capris and a long sleeve shirt for the first 20 miler and then a running skirt and t-shirt for the second 20 miler.  The only explanation I have for this is that Ohio weather is just odd!  Seriously, take today for example, May 3rd---pouring rain---93% humidity---43 degrees.

April Stats
129.81--  running miles (4 for 4 for hitting 100 miles per month in 2011)
0--  elliptical miles
129.81--  total miles
0 minutes--  rope skipping
No clue--  weight as of April 30, 2011 (I totally flaked on weighing myself this month)

Current 2011 Stats
471.11--  running miles
17.8--  elliptical miles
488.91--  total miles
1 hour and 55 minutes--  rope skipping

Overall I am very pleased with my stats for April.  We are now less than two weeks away from The Cleveland Marathon.  I have officially entered my two week taper.  The plan is to come out of this taper feeling rested, healthy, and ready to seek my redemption!

Keep running, you're simply the best, and you inspire me!!

Nashville Country Music 1/2 Marathon

Saturday was my final double digit long run before I seek revenge with a little thing I like to call 26.2 miles aka The Cleveland Marathon.  Shortly before last year's Cleveland Marathon my friend Deb came up with the crazy goal of running a 1/2 marathon in all 50 states.  Since we all know that distance runners can be a little crazy sometimes, I loved her goal and immediately agreed to working towards it!  The Country Music 1/2 was our 5th state.  The other states we have completed so far include Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, and Texas.  This weekend's 1/2 fit perfectly into my training schedule and I got to spend a long weekend with my best friend so it was a win-win situation!  Normally my goal in a 1/2 marathon is to finish in under 2 hours however Nashville was going to be played out differently.  In talking with my friend Dave, he suggested I run marathon pace, enjoy the scenery, the music, and the spectators along the course.  In other words, soak it all in and remember the course as opposed to just being focused on the clock.  We flew into Nashville Thursday evening and headed out for some dinner, came back to our hotel, and decided we would do a little shopping Friday morning and then head to the expo a bit later as Kara Goucher would be there at 3.  I was very excited about this as I just purchased her book and I was looking forward to meeting her and having my book signed.

We did a little bit of shopping at the expo, met Kara and had our books signed and then headed to Amerigo for dinner.  We had some yummy pasta and a drink and headed back to the hotel to get ready everything ready for the morning.  As I pinned my back bib, which I purchased from races2remember, to my tank top I thought about the fact that I was also running my 13.1 miles for my "Uncle" Joe.  He was recently diagnosed with esphogeal cancer and is currently receiving chemo.

http://www.races2remember.com/
Fast forward to Saturday morning and we are up at 5:30 AM to get ready to head to the start.  Nikki made it into town Friday night and her family would be giving us a ride to the start line.  It worked out perfectly because we didn't have to take the shuttles and get up really early!!  Little extra sleep is always nice!!  As we are in the truck heading to the start line, I realize I had forgotten my Garmin in the hotel...FAIL...pace blind running here I come.  I had told Nikki that I planned to run marathon pace so I would probably be by her for a lot of the race but if it bothered her I would run elsewhere.  Since Nikki had put her finish time down as 2:15, we all started in her corral.  While waiting for the race to start we talked to a few people and got a quick picture taken and we were off.

Before the race
After about a quarter of a mile or so I asked another runner what pace her Garmin had us at.  She mentioned we were running 10:27 pace and then told me to feel free to ask her anytime throughout the run.  I settled us into a pace and then we relied on Nikki's I-phone and the clocks on the course for timing.  We held pretty steady at 10:00 minute mile pace for a vast majority of the race.  As the heat increased and the hills greeted us, our pace slowed ever so slightly to just over 10:00 minute miles.  Nikki did a great job and mentioned that she enjoyed running with me because it felt more like a training run than a race.  I had told my cousin I would text her when we got to mile 12.  As I got my phone out to send her a text, she sent me one asking how we were doing.  I let her know where I was and mentioned that I would be done in a little over ten minutes.  I figured out where she and "Uncle" Joe and Dalton were and moved to that side to finish.  As I ran towards the finish line I had my eyes peeled for them.  I didn't see them and I crossed the finish in 2:12:45.  Right after I got my medal my cousin called my name and I walked over to them and immediately hugged "Uncle" Joe and couldn't stop crying.  He told me I shouldn't be crying and that I should be walking.  Through the tears we took some great pictures!  All 13.1 of those miles were for "Uncle" Joe!

Trinity and I

Dalton and I

"Uncle" Joe and I.  I couldn't hold back the tears.

Happy to be done

13.1 for you "Uncle" Joe
Nikki finished less than a minute behind me and was able to find me right away.  After talking with my family for a few more minutes they headed home and Nikki and I headed back to the fnish line to watch for Deb.  At this point I realized I still had my armband on and quickly took it off but it was too late...I have a nice tan line there.  I also realized my sunscreen fail by the end of the race because I had some nice red shoulders which could have been avoided had I remembered my sunscreen but of course it was back in the hotel with my Garmin!

State number 5 complete
We headed back to the hotel and showered and headed to The Cheesecake Factory for Lunch with Nikki and her family.  After lunch Deb and I went back to our room and took a nice long nap.  Saturday evening we met my cousin for dinner at The Capitol Grille.  It was delicious!  We finished up the evening by stopping at Coyote Ugly...all I can say is wow....it was quite an experience....definitely good people watching!!

Sunday morning we packed everything up and headed to breakfast at the Pancake Factory where we waited in line for an hour for a table.  It was totally worth the wait.  The pancakes were delicious and the hashbrowns were to die for!!

Yummy chocolate chip pancakes
We arrived back in Cleveland last night and I am ready to finish up my training.  I have a date with a starting line in less than 2 weeks!  Bring it on Cleveland....

Keep running, you're simply the best, and you inspire me!!
